Difficult emotions such as anger, jealousy and confusion are part of our life, as are positive emotions such as joy, happiness, acceptance and abundance. The Buddhist path could be described as moving more and more away from negative emotions and more and more towards positive ones. The Buddha’s four noble truths state that there is suffering, there is a cause of suffering, there is an end to suffering and there is a noble path leading away from suffering. Negative emotions cause us and others suffering. Becoming aware of them and learning to work with them will benefit our lives and the lives of those around us.

In this course we will explore what the Buddhist tradition offers in the area of working with the suffering caused by difficult emotions. Participants should be willing to work with their own experience. Each session will start and end with a short period of meditation. There may be short periods of reflection during the evening too. There will be discussion in pairs and in small groups, and sometimes as a whole group.

Participants will be asked to do some home practice, such as noticing down observations, trying to employ the techniques they have learnt in their daily lives, and reporting back about their findings.

The maximum number of participants for this course is 15.

The course is an excellent follow-up to our Introduction to Buddhism course, but is open to all.
