WLBC’s Film Club shows top notch films, selected and introduced by members of the WLBC sangha. Join us to hang out, watch the film and discover its connections (whether direct or oblique) to Buddhist teachings. All welcome.

This month, Jonathan Cohen presents the film based on Jonathan Safren Foer’s book Everything is Illuminated, for which there is a trailer below.

Jonathan writes:  ‘The film I’ve chosen is based on the novel Everything Is Illuminated by New York Jewish writer Jonathan Safran Foer, who in turn based the novel on his experiences of travelling to search for the Ukrainian woman who rescued his grandfather from being killed by the Nazis during WW2.  I’ve chosen it following my own “roots” trip with my cousins to the birthplace of my paternal grandfather in Central Ukraine last Summer.  The film mixes comedy, tragedy, surreality, self-discovery, identity, myth, truth, the circularities of migration and exodus, and the emotional narratives we receive, create, discover and rediscover.  It rings true with my own experiences of visiting the land of my ancestors, and of how those narratives can be transformed.  The characters in the film are not unlike the surreal characters we encountered on our road trip.  Expect the unexpected, and fields of sunflowers and poppies.

In our post-film ‘sharing’ there’ll be a chance (strictly optional) to learn and sing some traditional Eastern European songs, and to experience the delights of the Eastern European delicacy ‘Borscht’ (traditional beetroot and red cabbage soup).
