Film Club this Saturday: I ♥ Huckabees – introduced by Abhayadevi

Published on Mar 7th 2018, in News

If a Saturday night with some high quality entertainment, but not without substance, and in good company, WLBC’s film club might be just the ticket.  It meets monthly on the second Saturday of the month, and everyone’s welcome.

This month’s film (Saturday 10 March 6pm) is I ♥ Huckabees (2004), selected and introduced by Abhayadevi.  The film describes itself as an ‘existential comedy’.  Albert (Jason Schwartzman), the main character, is attempting to stop the development of a new Huckabees department store, but becomes troubled by seeing the same stranger three times in one day.  Determined to solve the mystery of this apparent coincidence, he consults existential detectives Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomin.  Along the way, Albert grows disillusioned with the detectives, and meets one of their former clients (Isabelle Hupert), who espouses a nihilistic philosophy very different from his own attitude to life.  Apparently the final idea for the film came to director David Russell in a dream in which he was being followed by a detective for spiritual and metaphysical reasons.

‘The universe is an infinite sphere whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere‘.  What might that possibly mean?  Join us to watch the film and see what light it might shed on such questions….
