A Transparent Heart: Exploring Metta and Insight in Meditation

Six Wednesdays 19 August – 23 September, 7-9.15pm

“To miss the link between metta and Insight is to miss the point of metta completely.” Sangharakshita

In Living with Kindness, Sangharakshita says that metta has the taste of freedom. All too often however, the metta-bhavana practice is seen as a preliminary practice to lay the groundwork of positive emotion for the ‘real’ work of insight practice to start. In this course we will approach metta from an insight perspective right from the start to explore just how powerful and liberating this practice really is.

The Psychology of Liberation: Bank Holiday Online Retreat

We have to start from where we are. The Abhidharma teachings help us to locate ourselves, to understand our minds in their current unenlightened states. It also presents an inspiring vision of what we can become. Thus the stage is set for the whole Buddhist path of ethics, meditation and wisdom. This path is a trajectory from the unenlightened human experience, through trust and confidence, to the five Wisdoms of the Archetypal Buddhas. Over the Bank holiday weekend retreat we will survey this rich and meaningful journey through talks, group exploration, meditation and ritual.

This retreat is for practitioners who are familiar with the mindfulness of breathing and the metta-bhavana and who are open to Buddhist ritual.
