From discord to concord

With the New Year and endless talk of resolutions, the world of media is filled with 52 ways to:

get thinner
sleep better
eat smarter
stay warmer

and on and on and on…

Perhaps some of us find this helpful. Perhaps some of us find this utterly discouraging, particularly if we set unrealistic goals for ourselves, not taking in the reality of our life situation. Sure, I’d like to be as fit as I was 20 years ago. But the fact is I am 20 years older. Fortunately still healthy but this ole body has quite a few more miles on the meter…

Resolution means ‘firm determination’ but also ‘fix a problem’, ‘take away a difficulty’ or, in music, ‘to move from discord to concord’. Isn’t this what we would like in our lives and those of others? More calm, more peace, less of a sense of jangling, disharmony, conflict, division, strife, cacophony?

So whether we call it a resolution, an aspiration, an intention, my wish for 2025 is that we each cultivate our version of an open-hearted, tuneful connection to transform and heal the discord inside and out.

With a bow
