Living with messiness

Published on Apr 23rd 2024, in Blog

Where did we get the idea that life is tidy?

How many of us think ‘if I just get this done, if that doesn’t happen, if they just behave themselves, eveything will be fine’? Ha!! Wishful thinking that we can control everything and make it the way we want it to be.

All we have to do is look at the news. All I have to do is look at my email inbox! And look even more closely, at my thoughts and wishes, triumphs and failures.

Life is messy, life is tricky and joyful and horrifying and unexpected and, perhaps most helpful of all to remember, life changes.

Things are impermanent, beings and situations and the waves and the breath and you and I. All are impermanent, fleeting, ephemeral, poof….

So what do we do with that common sense that is so difficult to live from? Maybe choose which messiness we can cope with, which we might be able to effect  – and then let go of all the rest to be its messy, beautiful, impermanent self (because it will, whether we want it to or not).
